After several disappointing campaigns, the Nebraska Cornhuskers emerged as Big 12 North champs and they should repeat that feat this year. The Huskers haven’t showed the caliber of running backs that we know this team for traditionally for some time, but an explosive passing game has turned this program around. The Huskers will miss Zac Taylor, but Sam Keller should be another prolific passer who can make this offense go.

The Missouri Tigers are going to be hell for opposing defenses. These guys belong in the South with all of the solid offensive teams lacking defense as Mizzou has the talent offensively to make themselves a contender in the North, but it lacks the “D” to be a truly dominant team. Last season, Mizzou gave up way to much on the ground which puts you at the mercy of your opponents. If they can’t stuff the run at all in 2007, the Tigers won’t post the results many, including myself, expect.

Ron Price was up for the challenge in 2006 as this first year head man led the Wildcats to a seven win season and a bowl game. QB Josh Freeman is still young and hopefully will further the progress he made as a freshman, avoiding a sophomore slump. But with a weak offensive line and a non-existent run game, that slump may just be a reality. Give Mr. Prince a couple more years and I think he has the ‘cats back in title contention.

The Kansas Jayhawks got abused through the air last season finishing ranked last against the pass in the Big 12. The fact that this defense has to face several NFL caliber QBs does not bode well for them.

The Colorado Buffaloes will continue to disappoint their faithful this season. A treacherous non-conference schedule will have these boys down and out before they even play a conference game. I’m not sure that’s the best move for this team. If they are thinking that playing Florida State and Miami is good for recruiting, I would argue that a winning season and a televised bowl game would be better than getting thumped by two solid programs early on.

The Iowa State Cyclones have perhaps the best quarterback to wide receiver hook up duo in the conference in QB Brett Meyer and wide receiver Todd Blythe, but because of a weak offensive line and no other wide receiver threats, this duo will not be showcased nearly enough. Gene Chizik will try to bring some of the magic he was a part of in Texas to Ames, but we will see no miraculous acts in 2007 for the ‘clones. It will be a miracle if this team wins two conference games.

That’s how we see the North breaking down. Be sure to check out the stronger South division in Jeff’s 2007 Big 12 South predictions.
