Texas Longhorns fans will be flashing their hook ‘em horns often in 2007 as QB Colt McCoy will lead the ‘horns to a Big 12 South title. He is the next in line of great Texas signal callers and he will be the best player in the conference this year as no other player has shown the ability to deliver in tight spots as well. No state has more football talent than Texas and the Longhorns pull in the cream of the crop every single year.

The Oklahoma Sooners will miss Adrian Peterson, but his loss will not keep them from being one of the premier teams in the Big 12 and in the country although it will keep them from a shot at a conference title. Plenty of running back talent remains to have another great ground attack. The Sooners may have more overall talent that the Longhorns, but Oklahoma will suffer from not having an elite passer under center. Although, we can’t forget that Bob Stoops’ boys have won four Big 12 Championships with four different QBs.

If only the Texas A&M Aggies had a defense to match its offensive attack. There is no denying that QB Stephen McGee and a couple talented tailbacks will be able to put some points on the scoreboard, but the Aggies’ defensive unit will give up their fair share in the process. Because of what the Aggies’ lack on defense, we’ll pick them to finish behind Texas and Oklahoma in the standings.

It’s the same story for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. On offense, they’re riding every bull, but on defense, they’re not corralling a single one. The Cowboys haven’t been inside the top 70 teams in the country in total defense the last five seasons and that’s why they haven’t been able to climb up the ladder enough to challenge for a title.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are also a part of the all offense and no defense club. In fact, the Red Raiders may have founded the club. QB Graham Harrell should be the next Texas Tech passer to rack up colossal numbers, but it may take him a few games to get going as an inexperienced offensive line will struggle early on and new starting wide outs will need some time to get comfortable.

The Baylor Bears will be in the Big 12 basement. How’s that for some alliteration to emphasize the repetitive sound of Baylor being a perennial bottom feeder. Unlike just about every other team in the this half of the conference, the Bears can play some defense. They boast one of the best linebackers in the land in All-American Joe Pawelek. The offense is its downfall with no returning QB or RB for this program to be really exited about.

Take a look at how Jeff sees the other half of the Big 12 playing out in his 2007 Big 12 North predictions.
