West Virginia will wear the championship crown this season thanks to the dynamic one-two punch of QB Pat White and RB Steve Slaton. The Mountaineers truly have enough talent and experience to contend for the national title as long as the defense holds its own.
Louisville will bring a prolific passing attack to the table behind QB Brian Brohm, who is the best passer in the conference and one of the best in the country. Losing head coach Bobby Petrino will have an impact on this team, but not enough to take them out of top ten nationally the way I see it.
Rutgers will put its most talented squad in school history on the field this season and an eight game home schedule gives this team an excellent shot to record double-digit wins again. Unfortunately for Rutgers, the two aforementioned schools have more talent. I’ll be looking forward to that November 29th showdown at Louisville and hopefully it will have conference championship implications.
South Florida is solid through and through and the offense gets a boost bringing in heralded RB recruit Mike Ford. The Bulls are playing a tough schedule and if they can get through it, they will be rewarded. This team is bowl bound for sure in 2007.
Cincinnati showed glimpses of brilliance in 2006, but a struggling offense was almost always their downfall. Upsets of South Florida and Rutgers last season show us the potential here, but we’re expecting a little backslide this season in Brian Kelly’s first year as head man.
No Tyler Palko or H.B. Blades, or Darrelle Revis. In other words, no way Pittsburgh is going to have a winning season without them when they were just 6-6 with them. The future looks decent though as Dave Wannstedt keeps bringing in new talent.
The Connecticut Huskies, like Duke and UNC, represent those strong basketball schools who are sorry on the gridiron. The Huskies managed just one Big East Conference win last season and just four wins overall on the year. Seventh place looks very likely again.
The Syracuse Orange are our pick as basement dwellers. The Orangemen have one of the worst offenses in the country and now they must try to improve it drastically this season with a new QB under center. It’s just not going to happen and last place will be the result.
Make sure you check out all of Jeff’s major conference predictions to weigh the top Big East schools against those in other leagues. As an insiders’ note, perhaps defensive size up front is the only thing separating the Big East from other top conferences, and some of these teams are making up for that by simply outscoring their opponents.
