2007 Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills head into their second year of their rebuilding project under head coach Dick Jauron. This simply means that Bills’ fans should not be banking on the playoffs in 2007.

Buffalo continued its overhaul this past offseason waving goodbye to mainstays like cornerback Nate Clements, linebacker London Fletcher, and running back Willis McGahee to name a few. All three of these guys have some mileage left, but the Bills’ front office wants to start from scratch apparently.

It’s so far so good for Dick Jauron who showed that he is up to the task of relating to a very young team. GM Marv Levy’s approach of going after high character players has made that task much easier on Jauron than if he were to try to corral the Bengals for example. Despite starting five rookies by the end of the 2006 season, Jauron had the Bills on the brink of a playoff appearance which surpassed expectations for all involved with the franchise. Jauron will have the luxury of no pressure in 2007 as this season will still be viewed as a rebuilding project. It is becoming apparent to me that Levy is going to have to look a little bit deeper for some talent that is going to put the Bills in a position to compete in a division filled with playmakers. The Bills are lacking such players on both sides of the ball. The guys they have now don’t exactly have star quality in my opinion.

The Bills have gained the personnel to exercise their traditional running attack. The team has moved on from Willis McGahee in favor of Marshawn Lynch and Dwayne Wright. Offensive line acquisitions Derrick Dockery and Langston Walker figure to bolster the Bills’ running attack. The Bills are not going to reach their full potential in the running game until a feature QB comes to town and I’m not sure J.P. Losman is that guy. Their likely would have been no Thurman Thomas without Jim Kelly. The fact that the Bills finished 30th in total offense last season is a big indicator that Losman will equal more losses than wins in Buffalo.

Defensively the Bills have gone after speed rather than beef with the thinking that undersized lineman and speedy backers will generate a speed rush. Coordinator Perry Fewell appears to be molding this defense in the image of the one he was a part of in Chicago. If this defense can learn to fly around the field like the Bears, gang tackling, hacking at the football, and laying hard hits on every play, they will show improvement sooner than anticipated. That, of course, is a big if for such a young team who will have to play their butts off just to finish ahead of the Dolphins.
