Denver Broncos went out and did what they needed to do in the offseason to make themselves a better football team. The Broncos got rid of Jake “The Snake” Plummer and the handsome salary attached to him. They sent running back Tatum Bell, right tackle George Foster, and a draft pick to the Lions to steal All-Pro cornerback Dre Bly. They brought in Travis Henry to take over the running back spot and experienced QB Patrick Ramsey to tutor Jay Cutler. And the coaching staff was even shaken up a little bit when head coach Mike Shanahan got rid of defensive coordinator Larry Coyer in favor of Jim Bates after a terrible second half slump.

Denver has felt some bumps and bruises dealing with missing the playoffs last season and the tragic deaths of two teammates, but the offseason moves to bolster an already solid nucleus has this team ready to challenge the Chargers in the West.

Mike Shanahan’s West Coast offense has always uniquely featured a power running attack. Every back in this system has turned into something special whether we are talking about Terrell Davis or Clinton Portis, so I have no doubts that Henry will have his best year as a pro in 2007. With assistant coach Mike Heimerdinger’s tendency to spread the field, and with Cutler’s rifle arm, we might also see some three and four wideout packages like they ran when Elway was under center.

Denver’s defense underachieved last season and it cost Larry Coyer his job. In the season’s first six games, Denver’s defensive unit appeared super-human allowing just 7.3 points per game. In the final 10 games of the season, the Broncos allowed 26.1 points per game — nearly three TD’s more. So in comes Dre Bly to team up with Champ Bailey to make up the best secondary unit in all of football. If Denver’s defensive draft picks pan out, this unit can be solid in ‘07.

The odds makers are giving us some room to breathe, setting the Broncos’ total wins number at 9.5. With Jay Cutler getting a full season under center and with the addition of several key players, the Broncos will surpass this mark winning at least 10 games this season. Mike Shanahan is not one to lose. He has produced double-digit winning seasons in three of the last five years and we will make our wager on the Over here as he will do it again.
