The Green Bay Packers will be the closest competitor in the North for Chicago and Brett’s boys will likely finish three games out. Green Bay’s defense has gotten better and the passing game is solid, but a lack of a running game will kill the Packers in this grind it out black and blue division. If Favre was on the Bears, Chicago would win the Super Bowl hands down.
The Lions grabbed yet another talented receiver with their first round draft pick. Because they weren’t confident in the abilities of other options on the board, they made the smart move and got Calvin Johnson who has the ability to be the best receiver in the league. Because of this talented group of wide outs, the Lions had the seventh best passing attack in the league in 2006 even with Kitna at QB. Mike Martz’ crazy offensive play calls are enough to terrorize defenses across the league, but these boys are still to young to give the Bears any headaches.
The Vikings were top notch against the run last season, but they were the bottom of the barrel against the pass. With no offense to speak of in 2006, they are hoping that first round draft pick Adrian Peterson can carry the load. I just hope Minnesota doesn’t over use him and get him hurt as Peterson does have an injury-prone history.
The Bears’ defense is the best in the business at forcing turnovers and converting them into scoring opportunities. Chicago is one of the rare teams in the NFL which preaches this takeaway mentality on defense and it has paid off. The experience that Rex Grossman gained last season will do wonder for him this year and in the rest of his career. Don’t be surprised if he rises to All-Pro status in 2007 and takes the Bears back to the Super Bowl. They’ll bring home yet another NFC North title along the way.
