1st Place – Chicago Bears – The Bears overcame injuries to two key defensive players last season (Tommie Harris and Mike Brown) to win the NFC, advancing to the Super Bowl. The emergence of kick returner extraordinaire Devin Hester and the sure foot of Robbie Gould made the Bears the best special teams unit in all of football. A big play defense led by All-world linebacker Brian Urlacher and an improved offense nearly gained the Bears a world championship. We expect Chicago to breeze through the division winning in by at least three games and to challenge for another Super Bowl title in 2007.
2nd Place – Green Bay Packers – The 2007 Packers will give legendary QB Brett Favre a chance to get back in the postseason. This team’s build from within approach has asked Packers’ fans to stay patient, but this should be a season where we finally see the fruits of the managements’ labor. The running game will likely hold the offense back some, but it should be better than last season. The passing attack was among the best in the NFL in 2006 and will be even more polished this time around. I like the Pack to get in to the playoffs with a nine win year.
3rd Place – Detroit Lions – The Lions will be pleased to know that they will likely avoid the basement this season. Mike Martz’ 7th ranked passing attack should only get better with the addition of top draft choice Calvin Johnson. Jon Kitna is likely not the long term QB this team will build with, but he is an accurate enough passer to give defenses fits. A poor running game and pathetic defense will both improve, but will still not be good enough to get to the .500 mark. A likely six win year is what we have on our radar as Mike Martz’ offensive expertise makes this team a tough cover by defenses across the league.
4th Place – Minnesota Vikings – This is an unfamiliar place for the Vikings, especially just one year removed from a season in which they were supposed to challenge Chicago for the division. Brad Johnson was not up to the task of running the offense which puts the Vikings in a tough spot as they must develop a young signal caller. Top draft choice Adrian Peterson will be looked upon to be the offense while Minnesota gains confidence in a signal caller. The defense which led the league against the run is the biggest bright spot on this team, but the last ranked pass defense must be a million times better to keep the Vikes from last place where we currently have them.
