Let’s start in the AFC East. Although the Jets were able to put together an impressive double-digit win season last year, they won’t be ready to challenge the New England Patriots who are the current favorites to win the Super Bowl. New England addressed their weaknesses at the linebacker and wide receiver spots by bringing in Adalius Thomas and a slew of wide receivers, including Randy Moss. They will run away with the AFC East this season.
The AFC North could prove to be the tightest race. The Ravens steamrolled their division last season going 5-1 against AFC North opponents. I like them to win it again in 2007, but not by much as Cincinnati’s offensive fire power makes it very tough. The Ravens have motivation on their side after flopping in the postseason and they have one of the league’s premier defenses to shut down opponents. There’s no question about the offensive talent of the Cincinnati Bengals’ roster, but off-the-field issues must be overcome before we can believe that this team is ready to emerge as the division champ again.
The AFC South will also be won by a landslide by the reigning Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts. Despite losing their starting tailback and several key defensive players, it’s apparent that the Colts are still the team to beat in the South. The Jags have a solid defense in place, but not an offense with enough fire power to compete with Indy. Tennessee is a one man show behind Vince Young and the Texans are still in the rebuilding process, but now under a first-time starter who must learn the ropes.
The AFC West housed the best regular season team in the league last season. I’m, of course, referring to the San Diego Chargers. An emerging QB, and MVP tailback, and one of the game’s best pass rushers all return, but a dismantled coaching staff is sure to provide something of a hurdle. However, the Chargers still have the talent to win the division; they just won’t win it by as much. Expect Denver to finish a close second with its complete roster and to make the playoffs as well.
The NFC East title is the Eagles’ to lose. They clearly have the most complete roster in the division and one capable of contending for a NFC Championship this season. With QB Donovan McNabb back healthy and Brian Westbrook emerging as an every down back, the Eagles’ offense should be more potent than ever. Defensively, the Eagles’ blitz every down philosophy will bother the other young QBs in the league.
The Chicago Bears will remain the class of the NFC North division. The Bears have won the North each of the last two years and captured a NFC Championship last season. QB Rex Grossman will continue to improve and running back Cedric Benson will get his shot as a feature back. The Bears are still the best in the North though because of their big play defense led by Brian Urlacher. No team in the NFL is better at taking the ball away from its opponents, and no other defense is better at converting those turnovers into points.
The NFC South looked a lot different in a hurry. The Tampa Bay Bucs went from first in 2005 to worst last season and the New Orleans Saints went from worst to first. It appears the Saints are for real and they will be the team to beat in 2007. MVP runner-up QB Drew Brees, powerhouse tailback Deuce McAllister, the extremely versatile RB Reggie Bush, and Rookie of the Year runner-up WR Marques Colston help make up the best offense in the NFC. We expect these boys to put a ton of points on the board again this season and for the defense to show some improvement which could help them out in the playoffs.
The Seattle Seahawks captured their third straight NFC West division title last year despite their two most talented offensive players missing a good chunk of the season. I’m, of course, referring to All-Pro QB Matt Hasselbeck and MVP RB Shaun Alexander. The 49ers, Rams, and Cards have all inched closer with explosive offensive weaponry, but these teams still lack the defenses to compete for a title yet.
Well, there you have it, Jeff’s predictions for the winners in each division. If you want to know who Mr. Alexander has chalked up to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy this season, find out in his 2008 Super Bowl predictions.
