2007 Preakness Picks

Jeff Alexander wasted no time researching his 2007 Preakness Stakes picks as soon as the Kentucky Derby was in the books. The lengthy two weeks in between the events and the fact that many of the top horses return to race at Pimlico gives bettors better odds in picking the Preakness winner as opposed to the Derby winner.

It’s important to start getting a beat on these horses before the odds come out. We already have a good idea of who the favorites and long shots will be so we might as well start putting in our time in the research room. Of course you know that race favorites do not present the same value as long shots. However, race favorites have dominated at the Preakness Stakes. In the 131 Preakness Stakes races, 67 race favorites have prevailed. For those of you not too savvy at crunching the numbers, that’s better than fifty percent. Also, six of the last 10 Kentucky Derby winners have gone on to win the Preakness. It’s really more like six for eight as tragedy struck for Barbaro in 2006 and one of those years the Derby winner did not start in the Preakness Stakes.

So one burning question one really has to ask is if they think that Street Sense can be the same performer at Pimlico Race Course that he is at Churchill Downs. Street Sense’s two biggest career wins, the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile and the 2007 Kentucky Derby, have both come at Churchill Downs. The only other place he’s won is at the Tampa Bay Derby, but he does have two seconds and two thirds on his resume as well. The Pimlico Race Course seems to favor Derby runner-up Hard Spun and show finisher Curlin’s fast-from-the-gates style.

Even noting the speed of the two horses who finished behind Street Sense, it’s going to be hard for you to rule out a colt with that powerful of a kick. In many ways this race is a debate of whether the fast out of the gate horses we’ll be able to hold off Street Sense down the home stretch.
