2007 Preakness Predictions

Make sure you read our 2007 Preakness Stakes predictions to get the skinny on the race before participating in Preakness Stakes betting this Saturday.

With Street Sense winning the 2007 Kentucky Derby, media coverage surrounding this weekend’s Preakness Stakes has centered on the Triple Crown. Street Sense will have his work cut out for himself as Derby runner-up Hard Spun and third place finisher Curlin will also be in the small 14 horse field as well as several fresh horses who also pose a threat. Even if Street Sense can race to victory at the Preakness, there’s no guarantee that he will win at Belmont to capture the Triple Crown. There hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since 1978 when Affirmed prevailed. Six of the last 10 horses to win the Kentucky Derby have also won at the Preakness, but none of them have won the Triple Crown. We won’t get ahead of ourselves with all this Triple Crown talk. We’ll focus on the fact that history is on Street Sense’s side this weekend.

Horse racing enthusiasts will be able to make a case for Hard Spun who jumped out to a big lead at the Derby before Street Sense caught him with his miraculous finishing kick. The shorter Pimlico race course and the smaller field should be to Hard Spun’s benefit, but the smaller field will also play into Street Sense’s hands.

Long shot lovers will tell you that Street Sense is a one course horse. His two biggest wins in his career, the Kentucky Derby and the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, have both come at Churchill Downs. Pimlico doesn’t have as long of a straightaway so Street Sense will have to kick on the corner. Those not pulling for Street Sense will tell you that this power horse lacks the agility to kick on the corner. It all sounds like wishful thinking to me.

There is no doubt that Street Sense was the best horse in the Derby field and in my opinion he will be the best horse at the Preakness Stakes. Todd Pletcher’s King of the Roxy is likely to get some betting attention, but Pletcher’s 0-for-26 lifetime record in Triple Crown events has me steering clear of his ponies until he can give me good reason to back him. Unless you can think of a good reason to go against Street Sense, better than the reasons I came up with, you better place your win bet on the Triple Crown challenger.
