2007 Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks overcame devastating injuries in 2006 to capture yet another NFC West Division title. While the rest of the West continues to mature, it looks like the Seahawks will fly away with their fourth straight NFC West championship this season.

The curse of the Super Bowl loser affected the Seahawks in 2006, but not nearly to the extent that it has affected the previous six Super Bowl losers as Seattle was able to overcome its problems to capture its third straight division title. If Seattle were to have played in any division but the NFC West last season, they surely would have found a different fate though. The ‘hawks finished 19th in total offense and defense in 2006 and had to overcome 12 starters missing a combined 52 games. The most notable starters missing action were All-Pro QB Matt Hasselbeck and former league MVP running back Shaun Alexander. Hasselbeck was not able to find any sort of a rhythm and Alexander’s six-game absence killed the offense’s balance. With these two stars returning healthy in 2007, we should be able to chalk them up for another double-digit win season.
The defense’s struggles can be summed up by one key statistic. They gave up 28 plays of 30 or more yards. Great defensive stands were often negated by a lapse which ended up in their end zone. The majority of these plays came through the air and pointed out the weakness this team has in the secondary. Jim Mora comes in to act as the team’s new secondary coach and Deon Grant and Brian Russell hope to upgrade the defensive backfield.
In order to help out the secondary, the Seahawks are going to have to get more of a pass rush from the guys up front who managed to average just one sack per game over their last seven games. Most of the defense’s problems last season can be attributed to the general tenor of the team. With a healthy offense on the field getting the job done, we can expect the defense to play much more focused, confident football this season.
The big question facing many experts this season when looking at the NFC West is if any of the young talented teams are ready to challenge the veteran Seahawks. The 49ers, with their potent running game led by Frank Gore, are the closest, but they haven’t had a winning season since 2002 and still appear to be one more year away. It’s the same old story it St. Louis — lots of “O” and not enough “D”, and Arizona just needs to get its young guns some more games under their belts.
The Seahawks will remain the class of the NFC West, letting experience be their guide in 2007.
