The Tennessee Volunteers are poised and ready to win the SEC East this season. With the emergence of Erik Ainge as the premier QB in the conference, the Vols become a legit national champion contender this season. An improved running attack gives this talented squad necessary balance which will make this offense a headache for every defensive coordinator who must face it. Tennessee’s challenges lie in their first two games on the road at Cal and at Florida. If the Vols are able to get through that stretch unscathed, they just might win out.
The Gators will stay a top ten nationally ranked team because of its strong offensive line which returns four starters. Tim Tebow will have to prove that he can be effective as an every down QB with Chris Leak no longer by his side. The reason why the Gators don’t have a strong shot at getting back to the national title game is the fact that nine defensive starters must be replaced.
Georgia is going to be a big player in this stacked SEC East division, but a very tough road slate likely keeps them from challenging for first. The Dawgs have an emerging star in QB Matt Stafford and their running game is old faithful once again.
South Carolina has a national champion caliber defense in place, returning nine starters on the dirty work side of the ball. The offensive backfield is experienced, but it lacks the talent that the elite teams in this conference bring to the table. A stiff schedule and the inability to put many points on the board will stifle the Gamecocks this season. These boys will not go down without a fight however, and we expect them to continue to play many close games. We will more than likely find ourselves taking the points with South Carolina a couple times this year.
The Kentucky Wildcats are hindered by a pathetic defense which finished dead last in the SEC against the run, pass, and in scoring defense. No amount of offensive talent can atone for that much deficiency on the defensive side of the football.
Vandy has nearly its entire team back, returning 18 starters, but it won’t be enough to keep the Commodores out of last place in this very talented conference. While Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee gobble up most of the top flight talent, the Commodores are forced to try to win with second look players. Vandy will occasionally pull a Jay Cutler, but they will never be able to get enough talent around a guy like that to challenge for an SEC title.
