The LSU Tigers appear to be the team to beat as we weigh this side of the conference with the season soon approaching. The old saying is that defense wins championships and that’s why we think the Tigers will end up on the top of the conference. The Tigers return eight top notch defenders to terrorize the league. A cake walk road schedule will also be to the Tigers benefit in this tough division.
The Arkansas Razorbacks still boast the league’s best player in Darren McFadden and several other top offensive performers, but their defense took a major hit with two of the SEC’s best defenders making the jump to the NFL. That’s enough to keep this team out of first.
Auburn is kind of in purgatory here as I don’t expect the Tigers to compete strongly with Arkansas and LSU, but I expect them to be much better than the two Mississippi schools and the Crimson Tide. We can expect an average bowl game out of this bunch which will be a huge let down after last season’s 11-2 campaign. A nasty road schedule and the loss of two key offensive players keeps the Tigers in SEC West purgatory.
Nick Saban is an upgrade as the head man of the Crimson Tide and he should be able to revitalize this program as he must get a team to the top for him to garner accolades once again. However, he’s not going to be able to turn the tides in his first year in Alabama. I think Saban gets the Tide in a bowl game right away thanks to a nice nucleus of nine returning offensive starters, but he is going to have to do some heavy duty recruiting on the defensive side of the football.
Mississippi State will be the best Mississippi school in 2007. The Bulldogs have 10 offensive starters coming back so that side of the ball should run smoothly. To the credit of head coach Sylvester Croom, this program is making progress, but it still appears to be coming up short of a bowl bid.
The Ole Miss Rebels could use a Manning under center and Eli would probably gladly come back the way his career in the pros has gone so far. The Rebs have brought in some talent, but they must mature it in 2007 and hopefully these young guns will be ready to compete in 2008.
