2008 ACC Predictions
Jeff Alexander weighs in with his 2008 ACC predictions in this college football betting article. Find out who he taking the top spot in the Atlantic and the Coastal.
Atlantic
1st Place – Clemson Tigers: +250 to win ACC at BetUS.com
We like head coach Tommy Bowden to finally get the monkey off his back and bring home an ACC crown. The Tigers boast the league’s best offensive weapons and the core of the top passing defense returns. Look for QB Cullen Harper to wide receiver Aaron Kelly to be the deadliest combo in the league.
2nd Place – Wake Forest Demon Deacons: +600 to win ACC at BetUS.com
QB Riley Skinner is a winner and he’ll have plenty of help when he is off the field with nine defensive starters returning. Jim Grobe has built this program to the point of being a perennial contender, but losing three offensive line starters and wide receiver Kenneth Moore will keep them from first place.
3rd Place – Florida State Seminoles: +450 to win ACC at BetUS.com
The Seminoles are clearly being overvalued here because of their strong history, but this program has been going down the tubes for some time now. Getting seven home games will help this team out, but paper-thin lines on both sides of the ball will hold this team back.
4th Place – Maryland Terrapins: +1400 to win ACC at BetUS.com
A porous secondary and lack of a pass rush will negate the efforts of an offensive which boasts the best offensive line in the league. But with three divisional home games and a soft non-conference slate, the Terps are all but guaranteed a winning season.
5th Place – N.C. State Wolf Pack: +5000 to ACC at BetUS.com
Getting back just four experienced players from the league’s 11th ranked defense is not a good thing. It’s going to be a while before the cupboard is stocked for Tom O’Brien.
Coastal
1st Place – Virginia Tech Hokies: +250 to win ACC at BetUS.com
Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor give the Hokies two capable QB’s behind a proven offensive front so the offensive figures to remain solid. Seven starters are gone from the defense however. We’ve come to expect winning football from the Hokies even in a reloading phase and they won’t disappoint.
2nd Place – North Carolina Tar Heels: +800 to win ACC at BetUS.com
The Heels will be the second best team in a weak ACC Coastal division. This all but guarantees UNC its first winning season since 2001. QB T.J. Yates and tailback Greg Little make up the strongest backfield on this side of the ACC.
3rd Place- Miami Hurricanes: +350 to win ACC at BetUS.com
Like FSU, Miami’s history gets them overvalued here. The Canes won’t be able to compete for a division title without a proven QB and a lack of talent up front. A tough schedule will do Miami no favors either.
4th Place – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets: +1200 to win ACC at BetUS.com
There’s too much change coming into play for Paul Johnson to get off to a magical start in his first season. After all, the triple option hasn’t worked at the BCS level in years now. A formidable defensive front led by Vance Walker, Michael Johnson, and Darryl Richard will do their best to keep the Jackets in games.
5th Place – Virginia Cavaliers: +5000 to win ACC at BetUS.com
The QB spot is a mess and the Cavs won’t have game changing defensive end Chris Long around to bail the offense out in 2008. Virginia won’t get the most out of its talented running backs and receivers without a quality signal caller and a proven offensive line.
6th Place – Duke Blue Devils: +10000 to win ACC at BetUS.com
The Devils are the longshot of all BCS longshots at +10000 and rightfully so with 25 straight ACC losses. We should see an improvement on last year’s 1-11 record, but it won’t be much.
