2008 PGA Championship Predictions
From August 7th-10th, the PGA Tour heads to Oakland Hills Country Club for the final major of the 2008 season and Jeff Alexander is all set with his 2008 PGA Championship predictions. It’s time for top competitors to take advantage and play some high quality golf with two-time defending champion Tiger Woods not teeing it up. They won’t get this chance again any time soon. The favorite, Phil Mickelson (+600 at BetUS.com), is going to have to play better than he did at the British Open a few weeks ago if he hopes to get back in the winner’s circle. With no further ado, Jeff reveals the three golfers he’ll have his money on in the season’s final major.
Phil Mickelson: +600 at BetUS.com
I am not normally a big fan of favorites, but Mickelson still gives us a little bang for the buck and the best chance to win at Oakland Hills. Lefty was the last person to win this event not names Tiger Woods and I expect him to play some really solid golf after a disappointing performance over seas in the last major. Lefty has five top ten finishes and a trio of top three performances this season, including wins at the Northern Trust Open and Crowne Plaza Invitational. Perhaps his most impressive performance of the season was a tie for fifth at the Masters. Expect Lefty to get his sweet stroke back in order and to get back to his winning ways in major tournaments.
Vijay Singh: +1200 at BetUS.com
Singh may not be on the radar of many for this major, but he should be. Singh quietly has five top ten finishes and three top threes. Like Mickelson, he played decent golf at the Masters (tied for 14th) and has played rotten in majors since. With the sour taste of a 102nd place finish in his mouth at the British Open, we can expect Singh to come out focused and ready to win. Also, Singh has two second place finishes this season but no firsts. He is in great position to pick up his first win of the season right here.
Padraig Harrington: +1400 at BetUS.com
Harrington is being undervalued for the type of season that he is having, but we will not hesitate to make him a part of our list. I know it’s difficult to win back-to-back majors if your name is not Tigers Woods, but considering that Woods is not in this event, and that Harrington has been arguably the best majors players this year, makes it very possible. Harrington is, of course, coming off a win at the British Open and tied for fifth place in the Masters. He has five top ten finishes and three top threes this season. The two-time major champ has become a major competitor in every event he enters because of the work that he has done off the tee. He has become a legit strong ball-striker under the tutelage of Bob Torrance, brother of Sam Torrance, the former Ryder Cup captain. He’s more than worth a go at +1400.
