2008 Sun Belt Conference Predictions
Jeff Alexander has made himself and his clients a fortune by knowing more about the smaller college football conference than oddsmakers. His 2008 Sun Belt Conference predictions will beat the college football odds all season long. Jeff rates the eight-team league from top to bottom below.
1st Place – Florida Atlantic Owls
The Owls appear to have what it takes to repeat as Sun Belt Champs. While early season games with Texas, Michigan State, and Minnesota could make the Owls’ record look poor heading into conference play, playing against a higher caliber of competition will only make them better. QB Rusty Smith leads an offense that no one in the Sun Belt will be able to stop.
2nd Place – Troy Trojans
Troy will sit in the upper echelon of the league despite the graduation of record setting QB Omar Haugabook. That loss is what will separate Florida Atlantic from Troy. The rest of the league won’t be able to compete with a team that is still strong offensively.
3rd Place – UL Monroe Warhawks
Graduation will really take a toll on a team which was able to upset the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2007. The vital offensive line is the unit that endured the most crucial losses. With holes up front, Monroe won’t be as good as they were last year.
4th Place – UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns
It’s all offense and no defense for the Ragin’ Cajuns in 2008. A pair of 1,000-yard rushers in QB Michael Desormeaux and running back Tyrell Fenroy will give any defense in the league headaches, but a defense which ranked in the bottom of the country in three major categories will keep Lafayette in the middle of the pack.
5th Place – Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders
Middle Tennessee State is lacking depth, especially on the all important offensive line with tackle Franklin Dunbar coming out early to enter the NFL draft and tackle Mark Fisher out for the season with a shoulder injury. This is going to make it much more difficult for QB Joe Craddock to operate without being under duress.
6th Place – Arkansas State Indians
The Indians are good to go at the offensive skill spots with QB Corey Leonard and running back Reggie Arnold, but an inexperienced offensive line and will keep the offense from being something really special. An even more inexperienced secondary will get the score run up on the Indians by the league’s top half.
7th Place – North Texas Mean Green
Like Arkansas State, the Mean Green will be on the losing side of plenty of shootouts in 2008. North Texas’s defense was the worst in the conference last season allowing over 45 points per contests.
8th Place – Florida International Golden Panthers
I’m expecting to see some improvement from the Panther is Mario Cristobal’s second year, but it likely won’t be evidenced in the win column. Florida International has the worst talent and depth in the conference so we won’t see this team contending for a title until better recruits are brought in.
