At 8 to 5 odds the New England Patriots are listed on Bodog as the overwhelming favorites to win this season’s Super Bowl. AFC contenders, the San Diego Chargers and the Indianapolis Colts are right behind New England listed at 5 to 1 and 7 to 1 odds respectively. With the way San Diego’s All-Star coaching staff was dismantled, I can’t fathom this team bringing home the trophy no matter how much talent they have as learning new coaches and their systems always forces a transition period. Indianapolis is ensured a good playoff seed coming out of a weak division which they will cruise through, but their losses on defense, which was already a weak spot, will keep these boys from a chance to repeat. The Patriots are my pick to represent the AFC as they went out and got the necessary players to fill their weak spots at linebacker and wide receiver. Adalius Thomas fill be a Pro Bowl caliber player for the Pats and we all know what Randy Moss and Donte Stallworth are capable of.
The Patriots are not my pick to win the whole thing in 2008. That honor goes to the NFC’s Chicago Bears who are showing the kind of value I like to see at 15 to 1 odds. Surprisingly the San Francisco 49ers are listed with the same odds and they haven’t had a winning season since 2002. The Saints are the only NFC team favored over Chicago to win the Super Bowl, but we feel the Bears beat them last season in the NFC Championship game with defense and they will do it again if they have to this season. The Saints have the best offense in the NFC, but the Bears have a constantly improving offense, the best big play defense, the best special teams, and much more playoff experience.
We feel that the Bears have the most complete roster in the NFC with Mike Brown and Tommie Harris returning healthy to bolster this dominant defense even more. They have the best linebacker in all of football, the best special teams player in the league, and one of the best coaching staffs. While the Saints are explosive offensively, their defense will keep them from an NFC title and a chance at a Super Bowl title this year. Once New Orleans can bring in a few more stars to match the star power they have on offense, they will be a legit Super Bowl contender. But until then, the Eagles and Bears, when healthy, will remain ahead of the Saints in the NFC race.
Get some value with your futures wager and take the Bears at 15 to 1 odds to win Super Bowl XLII.
