2009 Super Bowl Predictions
Jeff Alexander showed you who he likes to advance to the postseason in his 2008 NFL predictions article and now he is ready to reveal his Super Bowl picks in his 2009 Super Bowl predictions article.
NFC Champs – Dallas Cowboys: +300 to win NFC Championship at BetUS.com
I like the Saints to get back to the NFC title game as they did in 2006, but the result will be the same. The Cowboys are stacked with talent and after a second straight early exit from the postseason, this team will be out to prove something. Tony Romo, T.O., Jason Witten, and Marion Barber give the Cowboys one of the most dazzling offenses in the league again. Adding speedster Felix Jones through the draft gives Dallas another big play threat that teams will have to account for. While New Orleans figures to improve defensively with its host of acquisitions, the Cowboys are already stocked with Pro Bowl players on this side of the ball. Playing better defensively that New Orleans puts the Cowboys back in the Super Bowl and if you ask Jerry Jones, it’s been a long time coming.
AFC Champs – New England Patriots: +175 to win the AFC Championship at BetUS.com
It’s tough to get back to the Super Bowl in consecutive years, but the most successful team in the NFL this decade will do it. They’ll have to get past the Colts or the Chargers again, but that won’t be a problem for Tom Brady and company. Not accomplishing what they set out to do a season ago will be burning deep within this team all season long and it will provide the drive for another Super Bowl run. There’s no way that Brady and Randy Moss will be able to match last year’s record breaking seasons and they won’t have to. Don’t you think the pressure started to get to this team as the season went on? This team won’t find itself in the same type of situation this time around. The other thing that gives the Patriots the edge to get back is that they have the best coaching staff in the AFC.
Super Bowl Champs – New England Patriots: +350 to win the Super Bowl at BetUS.com
No team in the NFL has more postseason experience and confidence on its side in recent history as the Patriots and that plays hugely in their favor. I don’t have Dallas making the early exit from the postseason again, but on the big stage a young Tony Romo will not have the edge against the poised Tom Brady. Teams found out in the Super Bowl that it takes a strong pass rush to dismantle the Patriots attack, but that is an area where Dallas is lacking compared to the New York Giants. While adding Pacman Jones helps out Dallas’ secondary, this unit is increasingly being known as one that is over-eager, especially safety Roy Williams. The Cowboys are very susceptible to play action passes and no one does that better than Tom Brady and the Pats. A fairly easy regular season, playing six games against a weak league, should have the Pats healthy and ready come playoff time.
