Southern Cal College Basketball Season Predictions

Recap

USC experienced a decent year in 2010-11 having a 19-15 record along with a 4th place showing within the Pac-10. In the conference tournament Southern Cal made it towards the semifinals, then proceeded to go down in the play-in game of the tournament to VCU.

USC experienced results by becoming an excellent defensive team. USC held their foes to 40.9% from the floor shooting and also to 63.3 points each contest.

The loss of Nikola Vucevic and Alex Stepheson is going to be challenging to replace. Vucevic averaged more than 17 points every game and brought down 10.3 boards each game. Stepheson was the group’s 2nd best rebounder at more than 7 per game and also contributed just under 10 points.

2011-12 Overview

Kevin O’Neill has been the USC head coach for two seasons and has given the supporters teams that play tough and get better as the season progresses. This season’s group has a whole lot of production to replace, but O’Neill does have Jio Fontan, Maurice Jones, and Garrett Jackson returning. Along with a sound recruiting class the Trojans brought in transfers Aaron Fuller and Dewayne Dedmon.

Backcourt

Southern Cal will be heavily relying on their backcourt starters of Fontan and Jones. Fontan sat out the first semester last year, but returned to pace the group in assists and finished 2nd in points at more than ten points per game.

Jones was 3rd on the Trojans in offense with 9.9 points per contest, gave out 110 total assists, and established the school record with 69 steals as a freshman. His achievements helped to receive a place on the Pac-10 All-Freshman squad.

Bryon Wesley is a 6’5″ freshman perimeter player who’s expected to help to the offensive side right away. Alexis Moore is yet another freshman who really should see time and plays well on both sides sides of the floor. Junior college transfer Greg Allen can be a solid defender and can shoot well from outside.

Frontcourt

The Trojans three post players ought to be Aaron Fuller, Dewayne Dedmon, and James Blascyk. Fuller was forced be out last season immediately after transferring over from Iowa. In his sophomore season at Iowa he was honorable mention on the All-Conference team with 9.7 points and almost 7 boards each night.

These players will be pushed in practice by a couple of transfers who will sit out this year. Ari Stewart came over from Wake Forest and Eric Wise is a transfer from UC-Irvine.

2011-12 Iowa State NCAA Basketball Predictions

2010 Review

Not much was expected out of Iowa State last year. Virtually all of us figured they could be at the bottom of the Big 12 conference with just two players returning from the season before, but the Cyclones were sort of a surprise. Typically, it is tough for folks to be energized about a .500 season, but it was the first time Iowa State didn’t have a losing record since the 2005-6 season.

In Fred Hoiberg’s very first year, Iowa State entirely adjusted their identity. Heading from a slow it down and grind it out group to one which ran much more and spread the court. That alteration of pace helped the Cyclones rank fifth within the conference and 39th within the country in offense at 74.8 points each game.

Iowa State also shot the three-ball very effectively last season, hitting 275 (8.6 for each game) of their shots from beyond the arc. That was plenty to pace the conference and rank 13th in the country.

2011-12 Preview

Only two starters return for Iowa State this year, but the real key could be the addition of four transfers. Chris Babb drained 69 three-point baskets in his last year at Penn State and averaged 10.2 ppg in Big Ten play.

Tyrus McGee made 115 3-point baskets last season at a 48.7% clip. He was a NJCAA First-Team All-American and might play both at the two and at point.

Two more players to keep an eye on are Bubu Palo and Tavon Sledge. Palo played all 32 games last year and proved capable of playing the one position. Sledge would be the person with the most potential. He’s incredibly quick and was ranked as the 3rd best player in New York City immediately after averaging 25.3 points and 5.2 dimes in his senior year.

Frontcourt

Mevlin Ejim and Jordan Railey each ought to see time as returning letterman while Royce White, Anthony Booker, and Percy Gibson will all make an impression as newcomers.

Ejim had a really productive freshman season last season for the Cyclones. The Canadian put up 10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds for each game. He was only the 12th freshman in school history to average double figures. Despite his quality production, Hoiberg thinks Ejim will probably be even better this season. Ejim is more of a small forward, but was forced to play to the paint last year due to the Cyclone’s lack of depth.

Royce White was a very highly touted recruit two seasons in the past, but failed to play a game for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and then he sat out last season after transferring to Iowa State. White is powerful and can be an excellent passer. He’ll be beginning at power forward and may be the star of this team.

Percy Gibson was one of the top big guys in Michigan last year, putting up 21.2 points and 12 rebounds every game. Booker was a top-50 player coming out of high school, but only averaged 6.4 points and 4.1 boards when he was a freshman for Southern Illinois.

2011-12 Pitt Panthers NCAA Basketball Predictions

Jamie Dixon and his Pittsburgh basketball team experienced a really effective regular season in 2010-11. Despite playing a tough Big East schedule the team ended up with a 15-3 record in Big East play. They earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament due to their 28-6 overall record.

The Panthers defeated Connecticut handily in the final regular season game, but were beat by the Huskies by a couple of points in the Big East tournament. Pitt didn’t have much success in the NCAA tournament either, getting beat in the second round to Butler.

The 2011-12 edition of the Pittsburgh basketball team will have only two starters back. Regardless, coach Dixon has established a winning tradition and the program has shown to be able to reload when losing superb players.

Backcourt

Pitt’s guard play centers around Asthon Gibbs. Gibbs thought about entering his name in the NBA draft, but pulled out due to the uncertain labor situation. Last year he put up 16.8 points per game on 49% 3-point shooting.

Replacing Brandon Wanamaker will be Travon Woodall. Woodall is a good defender who must live up to the hype of being a decent passer.
