John Wall Cleared to Play

Seeing me here at STF again can only mean one thing: It’s basketball season fools!!! A big shout-out to Eric and the gang for allowing my STF eligibility to continue for another winter. I’ll be here all season with all the SEC goodness you can stand. With that in mind, Kentucky fans, you can breath a little easier. The savior of the program and potential Heisman candidate, John Wall, has been cleared to play by everybody’s favorite governing body, the NCAA.

Questions concerning Wall’s eligibility sprung out of his relationship with AAU coach, Brian Clifton. During part of his tenure as Wall’s coach, Clifton was also a certified agent for FIBA.  Because of that, there were issues related to unofficial visits taken by Wall during his recruitment process.

Read more about that here.

While there are stipulations regarding Wall’s clearance, he will be available to John Calipari as the season progresses.  Besides sitting out Kentucky’s first two games — the exhibition against Campbellsville College and the November 13th season opener against Morehead State — Wall has to reimburse the amount of money spent on his unofficial visits.  The total amount of Wall’s financial penalty: $787.58.

The money will be donated to Lexington’s Hope Center, a center for the area’s homeless population.

The NCAA’s ruling brings an end to a period of trepidation for Kentucky fans who were worried Wall would meet a fate similar to Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant.  As for the team, the ruling helps them prepare for season that sees them ranked in the top five for the first time since Tubby Smith roamed Kentucky’s sidelines.  Calipari’s first installment of Kentucky basketball is loaded with talent, and the Wall’s clearance makes them even more dangerous.

It should be noted, however, Derrick Rose was also cleared by the NCAA.  Granted, there are no apparent questions about John Wall’s academic clearance, but when you are dealing with an institution like the Two A, nothing is ever truly set in stone.

If they, at some point, decided to revisit Wall’s relationship with Clifton, I, for one, wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.
